Good Intentions

From the (soon to be) Reflection Series

‘Tis the season for resolution-making! Let’s turn ours into works of art. I like this practice for a few reasons.

  • The result is something tangible you can see everyday. This is helpful since remembering an intention is half the battle!
  • It takes time, and the more time you spend with an idea the more seriously the universe takes it.
  • It’s a conversation starter. An intention becomes more real the more you share it, and (pro-tip from an apprehensive sharer), while it can be hard to go around telling people about your hopes and dreams unprompted, it’s easy to spark conversation around something you’ve made. I did this challenge with my co-workers and heard awesome stories about inspirational yoga classes, work aspirations, and new family goals.

As for me, my meditation teacher assigned me an intention I didn’t want (that thing my mom always tells me I need to work on…ugh), and then it was confirmed by a Facebook gif. Of course, confirmation by the internet makes it indisputable, leaving me no choice but to embrace it. So…here’s to greater balance and to all our intentions for the new year!

Art Challenge

Time: At least 10 minutes

You Need: Something to write your intention on (I used colored cardstock); Your favorite drawing/ coloring tools

What to do

  1. Decide on an intention.
  2. Communicate it visually through words and/or pictures. Make it something you enjoy seeing!
  3. As you work take time to reflect on concrete actions you can take to live out this intention.
  4. Post it up somewhere you can see it everyday.
  5. Optional (and awesome!): Share your intentions on instagram with #makeartlifeintention and it will pop up in the feed below so we can all enjoy it!
  6. Also optional: A friend had a great idea of making a whole deck of intention cards and picking one to focus on each week or day. I love this idea because it’s hard to try to work on all your intentions at once!
