Reflection

  • How easy was it to put pen to paper and get something down for this challenge? Was it easier than it would have been if the prompt were just to draw anything you wanted?
  • Did you come up with any especially surprising, interesting ideas?

This Getting Started challenge is an example of one helpful strategy for overcoming inaction so you can turn your ideas for your art (and life), into reality! Chances are that the arbitrary letter requirement made it easier to think of ideas. It seems counterintuitive, but adding a constraint can lead to more ideas, as well as more unique and surprising ideas. And narrowing the field of possibilities makes the task of deciding what to create much less overwhelming.

Life Challenge

Throughout the week notice when you’re avoiding action. Challenge yourself to get started!

Try using constraints if you’re tempted to do nothing because you can’t think of anything (new) to do. Some ideas:

  • What to do this weekend
  • What movie to watch
  • What to make for breakfast
  • Where to take your next vacation
